Towson, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (16-28, 4-13 ACC) lost their fifth non-conference game in a row today, falling 6-3 to the Towson Tigers (21-22, 6-8 CAA) at Towson University.
Sophomore Justin Hulse (Rockville, Md.) made his first start of his Terrapin career, allowing four runs in four innings of work. Hulse, who was a starter at the school he transferred from, Gardner-Webb, allowed a first-inning home run to Mike Costello, and ran into trouble in the third and fourth inning.
Hulse escaped a bases-loaded one-out jam in the third, allowing only a sacrifice fly to Brian McKenna. But Towson made up for it in the fourth, with Bobby Paduano slamming a 2-run double to left-center.
He didn't get much help from his offensive mates, who left eight runners on base, including six runners in scoring position. The Terps were unable to score with a runner on third in the second, the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth, and a runner on second in the sixth.
The win gave the season series to Towson, who lost the first game of the series 7-4, but claimed a 7-5 win two weeks ago.
Redshirt senior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) continued his strong senior campaign by going 2-for-3 with two of the Terps' three runs batted in, one of which came on a solo home run in the seventh.
Senior Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) went 0-for-5, ending his hitting streak at a team season-high nine games, tied with a nine-game streak earlier in the season by redshirt freshman Brian Jarosinski (Olney, Md.). Junior Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) went 0-for-5 as well, ending his seven-game streak.
Senior Derek Hoffman (Hagerstown, Md.) had his best outing of the season, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing one run and no hits. Hoffman retired six of the first seven batters he faced, before allowing a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Terps will head back to North Carolina this weekend to take on conference rival No. 5 North Carolina State for a three-game series. Maryland, despite non-conference struggles, has won four of their last six conference games after beginning the season 0-12 and will look to continue that momentum against the Wolfpack, who the Terps swept last season and have won four of the last five against.
