Terps Drop Two Close ACC Tilts to Georgia Tech

April 6, 2003

Game 1 | Game 2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (11-13) dropped two ACC match-ups to Georgia Tech (29-16) Sunday afternoon, losing the first game 5-1 and the second game 1-0.

In the first game, a pitcher's duel ensued between Maryland starter Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Georgia Tech ace Jessica Sallinger (16-10). The Terps put up their only run of the day in the fourth inning, when Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch. Callaway proceeded to steal second. With two outs, Sallinger's control showed signs of weakness after she walked Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and hit Natalie Grossman (Skillman, N.J.) to load the bases. Clutch pinch hitter Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) delivered for the Terps with a hard-hit come-backer to the mound. Sallinger recovered the ball but her throw to first was not in time, allowing Callaway to cross the plate to put the Terps ahead, 1-0.

Georgia Tech came back with a vengeance in the top of the sixth. Shortstop Tara Knudsen led off the inning with a double to centerfield. The Yellow Jackets lineup followed with five more hits, three of which were doubles, to put them ahead for good, 5-1.

Aditays fell to 5-5 with the loss. She struck out six batters and allowed only five hits before being relieved by Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) in the sixth. Sallinger dominated in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing only Pollock's hit.

The second game looked to be more promising for the Terrapins behind the pitching of Cyphert. She allowed only two hits and fanned six batters, but a costly two-base error in right field set up Georgia Tech's only scoring opportunity of the game. The error occured when Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.) misplayed Soraya Reddick's single. Reddick reached third on the play and scored on a single through the left side by Lindsay Wood.

The duo of Sallinger and Erin Voeltz (10-4) overpowered the Maryland offense and held the team to three hits, two of which came from the bat of Callaway.

Maryland looks to get back on track in its doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's (4-8-1) this Wednesday. Game time is set for 5 p.m. and parking and admission to the Terrapin Softball Complex are free.
