College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (11-18, 0-8 ACC) had their five game win streak snapped today, an 8-4 defeat at the hands of the Georgetown Hoyas (7-20, 1-12 Big East), who put an end to an 11-game losing streak.
It was an overall miserable day for the Terps, as temperatures in the low 30s, a persistent mist and sloppy field conditions following a morning rain made for a generally gloomy game.
Freshman Mike Costantino (Somerset, Mass.) continued to be a bright spot for Maryland, however, going 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI to increase his team-high and ACC-top-ten batting average to .368.
But the rest of the Terps' hitters were baffled by Georgetown starter Pat Salvitti (1-1), who gave up four runs (three earned) in a complete game victory. The senior, who struck out eight and walked five, was making his first start of the season and came into today's game with a 9.64 earned run average.
Salvitti was able to get key strikeouts and took advantage of the Terps' eager bats, getting 11 fly-ball outs.
Senior Jared Stuart (2-2) had difficulty with his location, escaping the first inning after giving up three singles to load the bases but running into trouble in the second, allowing three runs on four hits.
Any hopes of a Maryland comeback were crushed when the Hoyas put up four more runs in the late innings to go up 8-1, though they did score three runs in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch-hit, two-RBI double by first baseman Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) and a throwing error by third baseman Jim Supple.
Two runners reached base on two-out walks in the bottom of the ninth, but Salvitti stayed in the game and struck out Gemmill looking.
Georgetown's eight runs and 14 hits were uncharacteristic for a Terrapin pitching staff coming off a week in which they allowed just five runs and 23 hits in five games. For the season, the Terps gave up 10 or more hits for the 14th time.
Maryland will take the field again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. against Duquesne, weather permitting. The game features a clash of siblings when Duquesne third baseman Pete Maropis goes head-to-head with brother and Maryland infielder Matt Maropis (Export, Pa.).
NOTES: Costantino has hit safely in 17 of the past 20 games...He leads the team with 12 multi-hit games (Will Frazier and Anthony Buffone are tied for second with nine)...Second baseman Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) extended his hitting streak to five games.
