Perfection!

May 1, 2003

Game 1 | Game 2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - 15 up, 15 down...and that's the way the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks lineup went thanks to masterful pitching by Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who completed her first career perfect game and the sixth in Maryland program history Thursday evening. Aditays (8-7) fanned nine Hawks batters en route to perfection. The Terps slammed UMES starter Christina Mason for nine runs, seven of which came in the second inning, to take the 9-0 affair that ended in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule. Maryland also took game one of the twinbill in five innings, 11-1.

The Hawks' only legitimate bid at breaking the perfect game came in the fourth when shortstop Marlee Johnson hit a hot line drive back to Aditays. Aditays's quick reflexes took over and she gloved the ball to preserve perfection.

The Terps also controlled game one from early on. The team tagged UMES starter Johnson for nine runs, the most they've scored in an inning this season, on six hits in the second. The Terps sent 13 batters to the plate in that inning, which was highlighted by a two-out two RBI single by Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio). Cyphert started the game for the Terps, but was removed from the game after injuring herself while sliding into second. Her replacement, Liz Gall (Bothell, Wash.) continued her on-point pitching this week, striking out seven and allowing only one hit in three innings of work.

Game one's offense was led by sophomore left fielder Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.), who ripped her second home run of the season to left center in the fourth. Pollock went 3-for-3 in the game and drove in four runs. Senior first baseman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) was also perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Callaway's offensive prowess carried into game two, where she went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs. Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.) and Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.) had two hits and a triple apiece.

Since Tuesday's games against George Washington, Maryland has outscored its opponents 43-1 and has completed two no-hitters. The team has collected 56 hits and raised its overall batting average from .232 to .255.

Maryland will get the weekend off before gracing the diamond on Tuesday against the UMBC Retrievers in the Terps' final home contest of the season. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
