Softball Terps Knocked Out Of ACC Tournament

May 10, 2003

Box Score

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - -- The Terps (26-18) ended their ACC Tournament run Saturday afternoon in a 6-3 loss to Virginia (35-24).

Similar to Friday's contest, Virginia jumped out to an early lead. Shortstop Heather Field led the game off with a home run that barely stayed fair down the left field line. Center fielder followed with a single to right field, but was erased at second on a fielder's choice. After capturing the first out, the Maryland defense struggled throughout the rest of the inning. The team failed to convert two fielder's choices and starting pitcher Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) gave up a two RBI single to Hannah Owings that put the Cavaliers up, 5-0. Coach Gina LaMandre brought Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) in to relieve Aditays and Cyphert successfully forced Virginia right fielder M.K. White to fly out to center to end the inning.

In keeping with Saturday's trend of battling back against teams who post four or more runs against them in an inning, the Terps began chipping away at the Virginia lead. With two outs, Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.) singled to right center and Cyphert singled to left. Senior first baseman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) smacked a RBI single to left and advanced on a throwing error by the left fielder. With two runners in scoring position, third baseman Crystal Rizzuto (San Leandro, Calif.) came threw in the clutch with a two RBI single to put Maryland back in the game, 5-3.

Cyphert and Virginia starter Erin Horn shut down their opposing batters for the next four innings until Cyphert gave up a solo shot to Christina Grimm in the top of the sixth that increased the Cavaliers lead and produced the 6-3 final score. Rizzuto was the only Terrapin to get a hit after the first inning.

Tournament Notes: Crystal Rizzuto led the Terps with a .571 batting average (4-for-7)...Monica Cyphert went 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA and batted .429 (3-for-7)...Maryland and North Carolina broke the combined team tournament record for most runs scored in a game (17) and tied the record for most home runs in a game (3)...this is the second year in a row that Virginia has knocked Maryland out of the ACC Tournament.
