Salem, Va. - The Maryland Terrapins (20-33, 6-17 ACC) made an early exit from the ACC tournament Tuesday night, falling 5-3 in the play-in game to the Duke Blue Devils (17-34, 2-21 ACC).
Though Maryland scored upset wins this season against then-No. 15 Clemson and then-No. 5 NC State and won two of three against Duke earlier in the season, the Terps were unable to advance in this week's tournament. Duke moves on to face Florida State Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
Senior Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.), the Terps' second team All-ACC pitcher, was not his usual self, walking six batters - more than double his season high -- and allowing five runs (four earned).
Regardless, Schmoll (4-5) finishes his stellar senior campaign with four saves, a 3.49 earned run average and 124 strikeouts in 87.2 innings. His strikeout total is a single-season school record, and he is likely to be taken early in the Major League Baseball amateur draft in June.
The Terp offense didn't give him much support, scoring three runs on seven hits. Sophomore Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI-triple in the bottom of the seventh to escape the shutout. Maxey and sophomore Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) accounted for four of the seven hits.
Sophomore Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, his fifth of the season, but it was too little, too late. Sophomore Chris Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) finished the game with four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.
Duke pitcher Jeff Alleva went the distance, allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out six in nine innings. Alleva went eight innings in a 3-2 win earlier in the season, going for the complete game but giving way to Blake Walker after allowing two baserunners to start the ninth.
Duke third baseman John Berger did most of the damage, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Berger appeared only once, as a pinch-hitter, in the three-game series earlier in the season. Troy Caradona and Brian Hernandez also added RBI-singles. Duke also stole five bases in seven attempts.
The Blue Devils put up four runs with two outs in the third inning, including a two-run single by Berger and with the aid of two outfield errors.
