Annapolis, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (19-29, 6-14 ACC) took the season series from the Navy Midshipmen (19-21, 12-8 Patriot) with a 7-2 win at the Naval Academy.
Senior Derek Hoffman (Hagerstown, Md.) picked up his first win of the season, allowing five scattered hits and one run in six innings. Hoffman moved his Terp career record to 5-1, and has allowed just two runs in his past 8.2 innings.
The Midshipmen, who are in the midst of exams and will play in the Patriot League tournament as the second seed this weekend, used six pitchers in the game, with the Terps putting up two runs each on Ryan Heykens and Mitch Eliason.
The Terps continued their strong play as a team, with six players picking up a hit and four different hitters driving in a run.
Leading the way was sophomore Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.), who went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four runs batted in. Maxwell has driven in four batters in a game four times this season, and leads the Terps with 10 home runs.
Freshman Mike Costantino (Somerset, Mass.) was 2-for-5 with his team-leading 15th double, while junior Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) reached base three times on a walk and two hits. Buffone is 6-for-13 in the past three games.
Navy jumped ahead in the bottom of the first on a Craig Candeto double, but were held in check by Hoffman for the next five innings, recording just three hits. The Midshipmen would add another run in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Seth Overbey (Waldorf, Md.).
Sophomore Brooks Norris (Baltimore, Md.) closed the door for a two-inning save, his fourth of the season, tying him with senior Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) for the team lead.
The Terps have won five of eight as they head towards the ACC finale and home showdown with No. 1 Florida State and the ACC tournament. Maryland's three straight ACC series wins marks the first time since the team started playing three-game series in 1990 that the Terps have won three straight, and only the second time they have won three in a season.
Tomorrow the Terps will square off with Delaware, a 7 p.m. game at Shipley Field in which Maryland will seek revenge for a 9-5 loss last week. The game marks the Terps' first at home in nine games, and kicks off a series of five straight home contests.
