COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Mandy Pascual established herself as a standout performer this season, executing near-perfect routines on the uneven bars that often boosted the Terps to victory. However, her drive for the perfect score also fuels her work in the classroom, as the Aiea, Hawaii, native holds a near-perfect grade-point average that has placed her on the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District Team.
Receiving second-team honors in District II of the University Division, Pascual maintains a 3.95 GPA while pursuing a degree in chemical engineering. Balancing school work and gymnastics is an ability the whole team seems to share, as the Terps were honored with this year's President's Cup for having the highest grade-point average of all Maryland women's athletic programs.
Pascual, who set a school-record mark of 9.925 on the bars this year, returns next season with fellow soon-to-be juniors Ashley Oberdorff, Lequita Williams and Leah Brill. An all-conference honoree on bars, the Terps will benefit from Pascual's high scores as they set their sights on an NCAA championships berth. Additionally, the team will benefit from the 2003 academic all-conference honoree in striving for their third consecutive President's Cup award in 2004.
