Football Practice Report No. 7

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The following is the final University of Maryland football team practice report from August camp. The Terps broke camp today, August 21, and now begin preparations for their season opener one week from today.

The Terrapins open their '03 campaign on Thursday, August 28th at Northern Illinois in a game that will be nationally televised by Fox Sports Net (locally on NewsChannel 8 in D.C. and CN8 in Baltimore) before heading to Tallahassee, Fla., for their Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Florida State.

First Taping of Friedgen Show Tomorrow
Tomorrow, August 22nd, the first edition of the "Ralph Friedgen Show" for 2003 will be taped and Terrapin fans are welcomed to attend.

The show, which will air Wednesdays (10:30 p.m.) and Fridays (7:00 p.m.) on Comcast SportsNet, will be taped at the Outback Steakhouse at Prince George's Plaza in Hyattsville, Md., at Noon. Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday, now in his 25th season at Maryland, hosts the show.

Pair of Terps End Up on Watch Lists
In the last week, another pair of Maryland players joined the long list of players to watch in 2003.

Placekicker Nick Novak was placed on the "watch list" for the Lou Groza Award, an honor given to the nation's premier kicker. And looking to make it two-in-a-row for Maryland, Leon Joe was placed on the "watch list" for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacke r (last year's recipient was E.J. Henderson).

Quick Hits
Wednesday, Aug. 20

One of the many Terps who is on the mend, tailback Bruce Perry, ran for the first time at the start of practice, getting some light work in. Perry made a few tentative cuts but continues to appear ahead of schedule as far as progress with his high ankle sprain goes.

Coach Friedgen was busy after practice, mixing his regular meeting with local media with a pair of live shots. Dave Feldman of Fox5 came out and hit Friedgen with a live shot right at the close of practice before the coach met with media and then did another live shot as part of his Ralph Friedgen Report on Comcast SportsNet.

Nick Novak continued his outstanding kicking in camp. The Lou Groza Award candidate had a few rough practices early in August, but has had it going of late. He hit all three of his attempts in special teams drills at the start of Wednesday's practice.

Wednesday was the first day that the first and second teams began working against the scout team offenses and defenses.

Thursday, Aug. 21

The mood was pretty light among players as this was a day that all of them had been waiting for -- the end of camp. Coach Friedgen said the team seemed tired but that he expected them to bounce back after having Friday off as well as a late practice Saturday.

Fullback Bernie Fiddler had a nice play, turning a screen from second-year QB Sam Hollenbach into a nice gain down the left sideline.

Domonique Foxworth came up with an interception working against the scout team offense.

Working with the first team, QB Orlando Evans connected on a long touchdown to Latrez Harrison as he ran straight down the right hash.

Season Tickets Remain
Though season tickets are moving at a record pace, there over a few thousand remaining for the 2003 season. The Terps open their home season against The Citadel on September 13.
