COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The EAGL's first Gymnast of the Week award for the 2004 season belongs to two sophomores: Maryland's Rachel Martinez and New Hampshire's Amanda Hall. The two gymnasts are co-honorees for their strong performances at last weekend's meets.
Martinez took the all-around title at her first meet of the year, Jan. 10, versus Ohio State and Pittsburgh. She posted a 9.85 in vault, a 9.825 on bars, a 9.775 on beam and a 9.85 on floor, tying for first place on floor. Her score of 39.300 put her tied for 14th in the national rankings. This is Martinez's third Gymnast of the Week honor, after she received the award twice her freshman year.
New Hampshire's Amanda Hall earned the weekly award thanks to her first-place all-around performance at Rutgers on Jan. 10. Posting a 39.100 overall, Hall tied for second on beam with a 9.825 and third on vault with a 9.700. Like Martinez, Hall earned Gymnast of the Week two times last year, this week marking her third such honor overall.
Earning Specialist of the Week was another sophomore from New Hampshire, Mariana Pena Trestini. She competed in two events versus Rutgers, winning both of them. Trestini took first on bars with a score of 9.875 and first on beam with a 9.850.
