COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams announced the signing of small forward Shane Clark from Philadelphia to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Terrapins, beginning in the fall of 2005. Clark, a 6-7, 195-pound dynamic athlete, is set to begin his senior season of high school at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., this fall.
"Shane is a complete player on the court. He can do many things - he's a great scorer, he plays defense well and he can mix it up on the glass," said Williams. "He is an outstanding recruit for us."
Clark has been described as a long and rangy player who can hit from the outside, has a mid-range post-up game and can put the ball on the floor. His ability to run the floor well and play aggressive defense should complement Williams' system at Maryland, according to Hargrave coach Kevin Keatts.
"I think he's going to have a great career at Maryland," said Keatts. "He is a quality player and a quality person."
Clark attended Cardinal Dougherty High School in his hometown of Philadelphia for three years before moving on to Hargrave for his senior year. He averaged 16 points per game, nine rebounds and five blocks and was an all-league selection as a junior at Cardinal Dougherty. Clark was just named the MVP for the annual Philadelphia vs. New Jersey Eddie Griffin Classic at Rutgers for the second-straight year.
Maryland, who loses only one scholarship player at the end of the 2004-05 season, is ranked No. 15/16 to begin its current campaign. Williams' Terps return 11 letterwinners from a squad that captured the 2004 ACC Championship, posted an eighth-straight 20-win season and reached the NCAA Tournament for a school-record 11th year in a row.
