Track Teams Successful After Day One Of ACC Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maryland track and field teams completed the first day of competition at the ACC Indoor Championships Friday. The Terrapin women are alone in fifth place with 25 points, while the men's team is in eighth place with five points.
Entering the final day of competition, Florida State leads the field with 49 points, followed by NC State's 41-point performance. Clemson tallied 33 points on day one, North Carolina has 21 points for fourth place and Georgia Tech is in fifth place with 19 points. Duke ranks sixth with 15 points, Virginia tallied nine points for seventh place, Maryland has five points and Wake Forest rounds out the field with three points. The ACC Championships will continue on Saturday beginning at 11:00 AM, and conclude with the awards ceremony at 4:30 PM.
Leading the Terrapin women was Kierra Foster and Teyarnte' Carter. Carter will compete in the finals of the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, after finishing with times of 7.51 and 24.54, respectively, in the preliminary heats. Jefferson will join Carter in the finals of the 200 meters with a preliminary time of 24.61.
Kierra Foster scored points in the long jump, finishing third with a leap of 19-10.25. For her effort, she earned All-ACC honors, and will look to score more points tomorrow, as she qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a preliminary time of 8.60.
The shot put was a particularly strong point for the women's team, as the trio of Zakiya Shivers, Bria Johnson and Labelle Hillgrove all scored points in the event. Shivers was fifth (46-06.25), Johnson was sixth (45-06.50) and Hillgrove was seventh (45-06.25).
Also highlighting the day was Heather Houston in the pentathlon, as she finished fourth (3476)
On the men's side, the distance medley relay team of Florent Groberg, Harold Manning, Mike Fleg and Peter Hess finished fourth with a time of 10:00.53. The finish gave Maryland five points.
Competition concludes Saturday at the ACC Indoor Championships in Clemson, S.C.
