Terp Track Teams Finish Strong At ACC Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maryland track and field teams completed the second and final day of competition at the ACC Indoor Championships Saturday in Clemson, S.C. The Terp women finished sixth with 50.5 points while the Terrapin men scored 25 points and ended up eighth in the rankings. John Collins, Rob Frelow and Teyarnte' Carter highlighted many strong individual performances on day two of the championships.
After 34 total events on the men's and women's side, the Florida State men and North Carolina women were crowned 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Champions.
The Seminoles, under the direction of first year head coach Bob Braman, won their second straight indoor title and third overall accumulating 164 points. Clemson finished in second with 142 points, followed by NC State in third with 88 points. North Carolina and Georgia Tech finished in fourth (83) and fifth (72), respectively. Finishing sixth through ninth were Virginia (35), Duke (27), Maryland (25) and Wake Forest (23).
On the women's side, North Carolina captured their second consecutive indoor title and 15th overall under the tutelage of head coach Dennis Craddock. The Tar Heels finished the meet in first with 124.5 points. The Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech finished second with 109 points, followed by Clemson (97) and NC State (91.5). Florida State placed fifth (78), Maryland sixth (50.5), Wake Forest seventh (48.5), Duke eighth (36.5) and Virginia ninth (26.5).
Helping the Terrapin men more than quadruple their point total from last year's championships were Rob Frelow and John Collins. Frelow's time of 48.46 in the 400-meter dash captured second-place honors, while Collins was a runner-up in the weight throw (59-05.75). For their efforts, Collins and Frelow earned All-ACC honors.
The men's 4X400 meter relay team also scored points for the men, as Harold Manning, Frelow, Robert Duru and Paul Dorsey, ran the race in a time of 3:18.99 and came in sixth place.
Also having strong showings were Matt Sanders and Pete Hess in the 3,000-meter run. Sanders scored points by finishing eighth (8:27.47) and Hess just missed earning points, finishing ninth (8:28.32).
On the women's side, Teyarnte' Carter was the top individual finisher on day two, as she placed third in th 60-meter dash with a time of 7.52. She also scored points in the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh (24.69). Behind Carter's All-ACC performance, the women's team finished with 50.5 points, up from last year's championship total of 37.
The 4X400 meter relay team of Carter, Tia Burley, Kristina Keegan and Toni Jefferson also scored major points, coming in third with a time of 3:45.36.
Jefferson and Burley, in addition to strong performances in the relay event, scored points individually as well. Burley was sixth in the 400 meters (55.74) while Jefferson placed sixth in the 200 meters (24.55).
In the field events, Zhanna Barer finished sixth in the pole vault (11-05.75) and Shenae Dawkins was sixth in the triple jump (39-10.00).
