Terps Take It To Richmond; Earn Third Straight Win

Richmond, Va. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team defeated Richmond, 6-1, Saturday, on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University for their third straight win. The Terps improved to 3-4, 0-0 ACC, while the Spiders drop to 3-5. Maryland continues its road stint on Sunday, Feb. 22, when they play weekend host VCU, Sunday, at 1 p.m.

The Terps took the early lead by winning the doubles point. Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) and Neda Mihneva (Sophia, Bulgaria) remain perfect in doubles. The duo racked up their sixth-straight doubles wins. Playing in the No. 2 doubles spot, But and Mihneva breezed by Devlin and Karhohs, winning 8-2.

Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and Masha Senic (Glenmont, N.Y.) collected their third straight win. The duo is now 3-0 in the No. 3 doubles spot. Dent and Senic defeated Carter and Klein, 8-4, to secured the early lead for the Terps.

In the No. 1 doubles spot, Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) suffered their first loss since Feb. 6. Richmond's Cox and Grasu defeated the Terp tandem, 8-5.

In singles Maryland looked sharp taking all but one singles match.

Marker, Mihneva and Senic were in the zone, defeating their opponents in straight sets. Marker won in the No. 1 spot, beating Beatrice Grasu, 6-0, 6-4. Mihneva downed Emily Applegate, 6-4, 6-1 in the No.5 position. Senic rounded out the Terps lineup. She played in the No. 6 singles slot and defeated Courtney Klein, 6-4, 6-1.

Three Terps found their singles matches pushed to three sets. But dropped the second set in her match, however was on the winning end in the third set. She defeated Megan Wolfgram, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.

Baker defeated Lindsay Cox in three sets. Baker lost the first set, 3-6. However, she rebounded nicely securing the win with a 6-4, 6-4 second and third set.

The only Terp who lost in singles was Dent. The sophomore took the early lead, winning the first set, 6-4. However she was edged 5-7 in the second and the match was pushed to the brink. The third set had an amazing 8-10 finish, with Richmond's Robin Carter coming out on top.

Maryland returns to the courts on Sunday as they face VCU at 1 p.m.
