COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Following an outstanding performance in which she finished among the top two in each of her three events, senior co-captain Sarah Hoenig was named the EAGL Specialist of the Week. She helped lead the Maryland gymnastics team to its first wins of the season on Jan. 31 in College Park against James Madison, Towson and Temple.
Hoenig notched a team-high 9.9 on beam to take first place and scores of 9.825 on the vault and floor to finish second on those events. Each of her scores counted towards the team total, which was a season-high 195.750-the second-best set by any school in the conference this year.
This is Hoenig's second ever Specialist of the Week award, after receiving the honor in March of last year. Sophomore Rachel Martinez, who took two EAGL Gymnast of the Week awards last year, is the only other Terp to receive the honor this season, earning it for the week of Jan. 12.
Hoenig and the Terps are back in action this weekend, Feb. 7, at the Governor's Cup in Towson, where competition begins at 2 p.m. There the team will rematch North Carolina and Towson, and will face NC State for the first time this year.
