BOWIE, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team defeated the University of Hartford by a score of 10-5 this afternoon. The Terps were led by Brian Jarosinski's five RBI on three home runs in the game. The last player to hit three homers in a game for Maryland was Jason Mohap in 1999.
Hartford (2-3) took an early lead on the Terrapins (7-7), knocking in four runs in the first four innings. The Terps bounced back in the bottom of the fourth, with Jarosinski hitting a solo shot for his first home run of the day. Maryland followed that homer up with back-to-back RBI singles by Dan Melvin and Matt Maropis.
Maryland took over the lead in the fifth inning when Jarosinski hit a three-run home run to left, bringing in Anthony Buffone and Kevin Hart. Maropis tacked on another run for the Terps, knocking in Jason Maxey, who had doubled earlier in the inning, with a sacrifice fly.
The Terps expanded their lead in the eighth with Elliot Singletary hitting a two-run homer to left for his third of the season. Three batters later, Jarosinski came to the plate and hit his third home run of the game and eighth of the season.
The Terrapins received solid pitching performances from their relievers against the Hawks. Josh Andrews came in to relieve Terrapin starter Ben Pfinsgraff in the fifth inning. Andrews pitched two innings and earned his first win of the season.
Dan Waters made an appearance in the eighth inning, striking out two batters without allowing a run. Brooks Norris earned the save, pitching the final two innings and striking out three batters without surrendering a run.
Maryland has now won seven of its last eight games and has recorded 10 or more hits in their last four games.
The Terrapins will be host the University of Hartford again on Monday, March 15, at 3 p.m., at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md.
