COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After a sluggish first half, the eighth-ranked Maryland Terrapins used an early second half surge to get past Dartmouth, 11-8, Tuesday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

"This was a big game for us," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Dartmouth is a very good team and they were looking for a victory. I thought we lacked a little bit of energy in the first half, but we responded and were able to come away with a hard-fought win."

Maryland held a 3-1 lead with just over 12 minutes to play in the first half, but the Big Green got goals from Molly Jenkins and Lana Smith to tie the game at 3-3 heading into half time. Dartmouth had other chances, but 10 saves from goalie Kirah Miles, including six on free-position shots, helped keep the Big Green off the board.

The Terps started the second half strong, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes. Jessica Dorney scored two of those goals and Delia Cox accounted for the other to push the Terp lead to 6-3. The Big Green were unable to mount a run at the Terps after that, as Maryland answered every score Dartmouth tallied the rest of the way. The Terp defense, who had surrendered 20 Dartmouth shots in the first half, allowed just nine Big Green shots in the second.

Kelly Coppedge, who was held scoreless in the first half, came through for the Terps in the second half with two goals and an assist. Cox led all scorers with three goals and an assist for four points and grabbed a team-best five ground balls. Dorney finished with a hat trick, while Acacia Walker registered two goals.

Maryland will return to action this weekend as it takes part in the ACC/American Lacrosse Conference Challenge at Chapel Hill, N.C. The Terps will take on No. 20 Penn State on Friday, March 26, and then battle No. 18 Ohio State on Sunday, March 28.
