BOWIE, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team suffered a tough loss to the University of Virginia on Friday at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md., by a score of 5-3. Maryland brought a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning, but were unable to stop a late rally by the Cavaliers.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first six innings due to strong performance by both starting pitchers. Terrapin (16-19, 2-11 ACC) starter, junior Chris Clem was solid in his 7.2 innings of work. Clem allowed just one run on five hits while striking out five batters. On the mound for the Cavaliers (30-7, 12-4 ACC), Andrew Dobies tied his career-high with 10 strikeouts in seven innings pitched, allowing one run.
The Terrapins got on the board first with one run in the seventh inning. Freshman Dan Melvin led off the inning with a single and came around to score later in the inning on a single by sophomore Matt Maropis.
After the Cavaliers got a run of their eighth, Maryland rebounded with another two runs of their own. Junior Will Frazier led off the inning with a single and sophomore Brian Jarosinski was intentionally walked after Frazier moved up to second on an error by Virginia. Junior Jason Maxey capitalized with a double to left field to bring around both the runners.
Virginia rallied back in the top of the ninth inning however, scoring four runs against the Terps to take a late 5-3 lead. Maryland was unable to come back, giving the Cavaliers the win.
Eight of the nine starting players for the Terrapins recorded hits in the loss, with four players with multiple hits. Junior Kevin Hart, Maropis, Frazier and Maxey each notched a pair of hits. Juniors Justin Hulse and Chris Bowen each made relief appearances in the game for the Terps.
The Terps will take on the Cavaliers again tomorrow at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md., beginning at 7 p.m.
