CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maryland baseball team was edged by Clemson University tonight at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C., by a score of 3-2. Starting on the mound for the Terrapins, junior Chris Clem was solid in his eight innings of work. Clem struck out eight batters and walked only one, while giving up just one earned run to the Tigers.
The Tigers (15-10, 4-0 ACC) took an early lead with Kris Harvey's solo home run in the first inning. Clemson was able to add two unearned runs in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead over the Terrapins (13-13, 2-5 ACC).
Maryland rallied back when the Tigers replaced their starting pitcher, Jason Berken, in the seventh inning. Junior Will Frazier led off the inning with a double and sophomore Brian Jarosinski capitalized by hitting a shot to left center for his ACC-leading 12th home run of the season. Freshman Dan Melvin doubled in the Terps' next at bat, but was unable to score in the inning.
The Terrapins threatened again in the eighth inning with junior Kevin Hart reaching base on a walk followed by a Frazier single. Maryland was unable to take advantage however and did not score in the ninth inning, giving the Tigers the 3-2 victory.
Frazier was strong at the plate for the Terrapins today, scoring one run on a 3-for-4 performance.
Maryland will meet the Tigers again tomorrow at 4 p.m. The game will be played at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C.
