CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Maryland baseball team dropped to Clemson University this afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C., by a score of 9-2.
The Terrapins (13-14, 2-6 ACC) were unable to match the Tiger's (16-10, 5-0 ACC) offensive production in the game after falling behind early despite senior Anthony Buffone and junior Will Frazier each picking up a pair of hits.
After Kris Harvey gave Clemson a 1-0 lead with his solo home run in the first inning, the Terrapins came back to tie the game in the third with a run of their own. Junior Joe Sargent led off the inning with a double off the center field wall and advanced to third on junior Bobby Ryan's single. Sophomore Matt Maropis recorded an RBI by knocking in Sargent on a sacrifice fly.
Clemson broke away in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take a 9-1 lead. The Terps got back one run in the seventh with Ryan knocking in freshman Dan Melvin who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Sophomore Seth Overbey relieved the Terps' starter, junior Sean Kane, in the sixth inning. Freshman Casey Baron came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning and pitched a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout.
Junior Chris Davis made his season debut for the Terrapins, coming on to pitch in relief for the eighth inning. Davis pitched one inning and struck out one batter without allowing a run. Junior Kevin Hart's hitting streak came to an end after 12 games.
The Terrapins will take on Clemson in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be played at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C.
