SALEM, Va. - The University of Maryland baseball team was edged No. 5 Georgia Tech on Wednesday at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium in Salem, Va., by a score of 4-3. The No. 9 seeded Terrapins out-hit the No. 1 seeded Yellow Jackets in the loss.
Starting on the mound for the Terrapins (22-33, 5-21 ACC) junior Sean Kane threw a complete game against the Yellow Jackets (39-17, 19-5 ACC), surrendering four runs on nine hits in eight innings of work. Behind Kane, the Terps had a stellar defensive game, turning three double plays without any errors.
The Terrapins got on the scoreboard first, putting up two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Matt Maropis led off the inning with a triple to center field and scored when junior Will Frazier singled to right center. Later in the inning, freshman Dan Melvin singled to right field, scoring Frazier for the Terps' second run.
Georgia Tech responded with four runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Maryland cut the lead to one by scoring a run in the eighth, but was unable to overtake the lead. Sophomore Brian Jarosinski doubled down the left field line and came in to score on a Melvin single to right field.
Juniors Kevin Hart and Truan Mehl along with Maropis and Jarosinski each picked up a pair of hits in the loss. Melvin stole his fourth base of the season.
The No. 9 seeded Terrapins will be in action again tomorrow when they meet the No. 5 seeded University of North Carolina at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium for a 10 a.m. game.
