FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Sophomore Tyler Witman shot identical rounds of 1-over-par 71 to earn the individual lead and spark Maryland to the team lead after Friday's 36 holes at The McLaughlin men's golf tournament hosted by Saint John's University at Bethpage State Park.
Witman led the individual standings by two shots over Kyle Kelly of Boston College, Jayson Kohlman of St. Thomas Aquinas and Maryland's Hunter Bendall, who was entered in the tournament as an indvidual. Bendall had rounds of 72 and 72 on Friday.
Maryland had three other players in the top 10 individually on Friday, as John Eades shot a 67 in the opening round en route to a 145 total that tied him for fifth. Teammate Matt Schall was in a group at 145 after rounds of 74 and 71.
Freshman J.J. Occi, playing well in his first fall season as a collegian, was tied for 10th at 73-73--146.
Maryland took the team lead with a 285 in the opening round and finished Friday's rounds with a 576 total after 36 holes. The Terrapins led by eight shots over St. Thomas Aquinas, with Boston College in third at 585.
The final round of The McLaughlin will be played on Saturday.
