
Women's Tennis Dominates at Maryland Invitational

College Park, Md. - The Maryland Women's tennis team began their fall season in stride on the first day of the Maryland Invitational. The first day of action saw six Terrapin participants record victories in the first two rounds of singles play to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.
In Flight A action, Junior Veronika Subertova cruised in her first two matches as a Maryland Terrapin, as she defeated Kelly Walsh of West Virginia 6-2, 6-4. Subertova then went on to beat Akane Kokubo of Cornell 6-3, 6-1 and advance to the semifinals. Freshman Julia Graca was victorious as she beat Mora Gelblum of Georgetown 6-2, 6-0. Graca went on to defeat Mollie Edinson in the quarterfinal 6-0, 7-6(4) to advance to the semifinals. Junior Jennifer Dent was also victorious in Flight A play as she topped Lindsay Cox of Richmond 7-6(4), 6-1. In the second round Dent defeated Kasia Preneta of Cornell 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. Terrapin teammates Dent and Graca will meet in a seminfinal showdown on day two of tournament play.
Sophomore Masha Senic recorded her first two victories of the fall season as she defeated Meghan Wolfgram of Richmond 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Senic fought back after losing the second set to take the tiebreaker from Wolgram. The sophomore continued her fine play as she ousted Prinz of West Virginia 6-3, 6-0.
The next set of victories for the Terps came in Flight C as Freshman Tamar Huppes defeated Liying Wang of Cornell in the first round and Catherine Koontz of West Virginia in the quarterfinals to advance. Junior Neda Minheva began her day with a victory over Jelena Zivanovice of Richmond. In the quarterfinals, Minheva proceeded to blow by Kara Maloy of Cornell, 6-2, 6-0, closing out a successful first day of singles action for Maryland.
Sophomore Brooke Rogers received a first round bye in Flight D and then advanced to the semifinals after Byrnne Ward of American withdrew from the tournament.
The Terps were not done as Tamar Huppes and Julia Graca looked very impressive in Flight A doubles play as they defeated Kasia Preneta and Kara Maloy 6-2, 6-0.
On the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, Junior Ramona But and Junior Marianne Baker took part in the first day of the Cissie Leary Invitational. But who is currently ranked twenty second in the country downed Andreea Nicuelscu of Penn State, 6-2, 6-2. Baker suffered her first loss of fall play as she was downed by Naluca Ciochina of Pennsylvania, 6-3, 6-1. But and Baker paired up in doubles play to blow by Schiffman and Comemos of Pennsylvania, 8-2.
