Terp Gymnast Named EAGL Specialist of the Week

Jan. 11, 2005

Redshirt Sophomore Rachel Colon has been named EAGL Specialist of the Week for her performance at the Maui Invitational. Colon earned a 9.8 on the uneven bars and a league-best 9.875 on balance beam.

Colon's efforts on the uneven bars helped the Terps win that event at the Maui Invitational. She was runner-up on the balance beam, finishing second to the defending NCAA National Champion in that event.

This is the first time Colon has received this honor. The EAGL Specialist of the Week is given to the best gymnast in the conference who competes in three or less events.

Junior Rachel Martinez had the highest all-around score of the conference this week with a 38.725. Senior Leah Brill tied with senior Mandy Pascual for the highest score in the conference on bars with a 9.825. Maryland's meet total of 193.975 was the highest score in the conference. They are now ranked #15 in the nation based on their score at the Maui Invitational.

The Terps travel to Ohio State on Saturday, Jan. 15 to take on Ohio State, #3 Michigan and Minnesota.
