COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland won two of the first three matches, including an upset victory by Charlie Pinto over the 13th-ranked wrestler in the country, but 20th-ranked Navy surged through the rest of the lineup to defeat the Terps, 35-6 victory Thursday night at Comcast Center Pavilion.

"I thought our guys fought hard," head coach Pat Santoro said. "Navy is a good, well-coached team. All of our guys fought hard for seven minutes, and that's all we can ask."

Kevin Vinh (125) got things started for the Terps with a 4-3 win over Alex Usztics. Vinh scored a takedown midway through the first and was able to hold on the rest of the period. Usztics opened the second with a reversal, but Vinh escaped before the period was over to take a 3-2 lead into the third. Vinh escaped to start the third and was penalized one point for grabbing Usztics singlet, but was able to hold on for the 4-3 win to give Maryland the early 3-0 lead.

After Sam Gray pinned Sean Carr at 133, Charlie Pinto stunned No. 13 Nate Gulosh with an 8-5 decision at 141. Pinto scored a pair of first period takedowns to go ahead 4-2 after the first period. Gulosh countered with a strong second period scoring an escape and a takedown and went into the third tied 5-5. Pinto started the third with an escape, and converted on a late takedown in the third to seal the upset victory.

Maryland was unable to capitalize on the Pinto victory, though, as Navy won the next seven weight classes (including a Terrapin forfeit at heavyweight). The Terps looked to get back into the match, but Midshipmen Pat Lukanich and Deon Barret pulled out narrow victories at 157 and 165 to keep the momentum. Matt Stolpinski (174) registered a pin and Andrew Adams (197) scored a technical fall as the Midshipmen scored 29 unanswered points.

Maryland will be back in action next week on the road Friday, Jan. 21, at VMI and ACC newcomer Virginia Tech on Saturday, Jan. 22.
