Jan. 22, 2005

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Charlie Pinto and Jason Kiessling picked up individual wins as the Terps fell 32-6 in ACC wrestling action Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. The Hokies remained unbeaten in the conference with a 3-0 mark, while the Terps are 0-3 in the league.

The Hokies got up on Maryland early, winning a decision at 125 and picking up a fall by eighth-ranked David Hoffman at 133. Pinto cut the Tech lead to 9-3 with a 6-3 decision over Donny Ooton at 141.

The Virginia Tech lead swelled to 13 points after a decision and major decision at 149 and 157. The match at 157 was supposed to be a battle of ACC unbeatens, but Adam James was unable to wrestle and Virginia Tech's Reed Carpenter moved to 3-0 in the ACC.

Kiessling picked up Maryland's second victory of the day upsetting 20th-ranked Chris Stith. Kiessling, who had beaten Stith earlier this season at the Southern Scuffle, came away with the hard-fought 3-2 decision.

The Hokies then closed the match with four straight victories, winning by major decision at 184 and a forfeit at heavweight. Yony Noy, wrestling at 197, lost a tough 5-3 match to Thomas Ovalle.

Maryland will be back in action at Comcast Pavilion next Saturday for a double-dual against Duquesne and UNC Greensboro.
