The Maryland Gymnastics team was strong in two events but could not overtake a Penn State team which had its best meet of the season. The Nittany Lions defeated the Terps 196.300-192.325. Penn State started off with an excellent vault rotation, scoring a 48.975 and outscored Maryland on every event.
Maryland performed well on uneven bars (48.775) and floor exercise (48.750) but struggled on balance beam (46.925) and vault (47.875).
Freshman Gretchen Kittelberger and sophomore Angie Ferg have been consistent on vault all season and led the team with a 9.700.
The Terps were without their uneven bars specialist Mandy Pascual who was replaced in the lineup by Junior Alex Gatch who scored a 9.725. Junior Rachel Martinez and redshirt sophomore Rachel Colon led the way, scoring a 9.80. Senior Leah Brill followed with a 9.750.
Maryland entered the meet ranked 20th in the nation on balance beam but had difficulty in that event Saturday. Ferg led the squad with a 9.575 and Martinez followed with a 9.500.
Redshirt sophomore Ginny Scott paced the Terps on floor exercise, scoring a 9.825, which is her highest total of the season. Kittelberger and Ferg followed with a 9.775.
Martinez finished third in the all-around, scoring a 38.125.
Maryland will travel to the University of North Carolina to compete in the Governor's Cup Saturday, February 5 at 2p.m.
