College Station, Tx. - The Maryland women's tennis team fell to the Aggies of Texas A&M, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon in College Station, Tx. This marked the second year in a row that the two teams have squared off. The Aggies narrowly defeated the Terps, 4-3, last season. Match play began at the outdoor courts of the George P. Mitchell Center, but rain caused the two teams to move play indoors. The action finished up at the indoor courts at the City of Bryan Tennis Center.
Ramona But defeated Helga Vieira in the no. 1 singles matchup, 6-2, 6-0. Vieria ranked 47th in the country proved to be no match for But who is currently ranked 40th. Lauren Walker of Texas A&M, defeated Marianne Baker 6-2, 6-4. Jennifer Dent got off to a good start winning the first set against Anna Lubinsky, 6-2 but lost the second set, 7-5 and the tiebreaker 1-0(6). The Terps struggled in singles action as the Aggies took five of six singles matches and Texas A&M also swept Maryland in doubles play.
Maryland will be back in action this weekend as the team travels to Columbia, Sc. The Terps will face the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday and the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday.
