Maryland Gymnastics Team Finishes Second at Maui Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland Gymnastics team had a strong showing at the Maui Invitational Friday night. Maryland scored 193.975 to finish second behind #9 Arizona who scored a 195.7. Alaska-Anchorage finished third with a score of 191.275 and Boise State was fourth with a 190.900.
The Terps scored 47.775 on vault, which was dominated by Arizona State. junior Rebecca Ruppert was a bright spot for the team, finishing tied for fourth with a 9.775.
Maryland came back strong on bars, winning the event with a 48.825. Seniors Leah Brill and Mandy Pascual finished tied for third with a score of 9.825. Redshirt Sophomore Rachel Colon scored a 9.8 and junior Rachel Martinez scored a 9.7 on the event.
The team has been training hard on beam and scored a 48.575. Maryland faced defending balance beam national champion, Ashley Kelly (ASU) who finished first with a 9.925. Colon finished tied for second with a 9.875. Martinez scored a 9.85 and Brill followed with a 9.8.
Arizona State dominated the floor exercise but Maryland had some strong performances, scoring 48.8. Martinez scored a 9.85 to finish tied for fifth place. Brill and redshirt sophomore Ginny Scott scored a 9.8 on the event.
Martinez scored a 38.725 in the all-around to finish fourth behind Lauren Powell, Arizona State (39.375), Ashley Kelly, Arizona State (38.975) and Cassandra Jusino, Arizona State (38.85).
Full results for the Maui Invitational will be posted soon. The Terps head to Ohio State on Jan. 15 to take on Ohio State,#3 Michigan and #19 Minnesota. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
