
Terps Post Solid Showing at ITA East Regional

West Point, N.Y. - The Maryland women's tennis team took part in the ITA East Regional hosted by Army and came away with some impressive results. The tournament featured some of the elite players from the top tennis programs across the country. Terp players Ramona But, Marianne Baker, Jennifer Dent, Neda Mihneva, and Veronika Subertova represented Maryland in the tournament field.
In singles action, junior Marianne Baker cruised past some of the toughest opponents in the country en route to the semifinals. In the first round, she defeated Veronica Brown of Bucknell, 6-1, 6-0. Baker would move on to face Monica Lyskawa of West Virginia in the round of 32. It was more of the same for Baker as she topped Lyskawa, 6-2, 6-1. Her next opponent Eva Wang of Harvard withdrew from the tournament due to an injury. This paved the way for a quarterfinal match with Kellie Schmitt of Marshall. Baker continued her hot streak by defeating Schmitt, 6-2, 6-3. Baker advanced to the semifinal round of the 128 player field before falling to Megan Moulton-Levy of William and Mary, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Ramona But, currently ranked 31st in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association defeated Amanda Salontz of Brown in her first match. But shutout Salontz in the first set 6-0, then went on to take the second set, 6-4. In the round of 32, match But topped Zeynep Altinay of Binghamton, 6-2, 6-3. But moved on to the round of 16 where she ousted Stephanie Schnitter of Harvard, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal match, But won the first set 7-5, over Katarina Zoricic of William and Mary. Zoricic took a 6-3 lead in the second set before But had to retire from the match due to injury.
Senior Veronika Subertova fell in a tough three set match to Dominique Liquori of Fordham. Liquori took the first set, 6-3, Subertova rebounded to win the second set, 6-3. A seesaw match up ended when Liquori bounced back to take the final set also by a score of 6-3. Senior Jennifer Dent who has put together some solid matches this fall continued with several key wins in the tournament. She took part in the qualifying portion of the tournament. Dent bested Danielle Abraham of Boston University, 7-6(4), 6-4. Next up for Dent was a match with Christine Kansky of Princeton. Dent downed Kansky 6-1, 6-4 to move on to qualify for the 128 player tournament. Dent fell in the first round to Kristy Borza of Pittsburgh, 6-0, 6-3.
Neda Mihneva also continued her strong play during the fall by winning three matches. The senior met Emmy Fritz-Kockrow of William and Mary in the first round, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Mihneva moved on to top Ana Maslesa of Temple, 6-4, 6-2. In the round of 32, she would meet Steph Cohen of Georgetown. Mihneva cruised in this match winning, 6-3, 6-1. In the next round, Mihneva fell to Kellie Schmitt of Marshall, 6-3, 7-5 coming up one win short of a match up with teammate Marianne Baker.
In doubles play, the tandem of Marianne Baker and Ramona But currently ranked 50th in the ITA rankings had a strong showing in the doubles bracket. Baker and But won their first four doubles matches in convincing fashion. They would meet Melissa Anderson and Elsa O'Rian of Harvard in the finals. The combo from Harvard currently ranked 40th in the country proved to tough for Baker and But as they won the final match, 8-5.
