The women's cross country team finished eighth at the 28th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in Tallahassee, Fla. on Monday.
"As a team we performed better than last year," said coach Dr. Michael Garrison. "We are learning to rise to increased expectations."
For Maryland, junior Laurel Jefferson finished 26th overall in a time of 20:26.70. Next for the Terps was senior Cori Koch who came in 37th in 20:41.40. The pair have been Maryland's top runners at every meet this season.
Also for the Terps, senior Katie Purcell finished 44th (20:52.90) and, in her first race of the season, junior Meghan Braffet came in 55th overall. Senior Danielle Siebert crossed in 21:21.80, good for 58th place and freshman Kylynn McKinley came in 60th at her first career ACC meet. Shari Gorga and Allison Carney finished 67th and 71st, respectively.
Duke won the 12-team competition with a score of 20. The top-ranked Blue Devils were followed by NC State, Wake Forest, Boston College, North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia. Six of the seven schools that finished ahead of Maryland are currently ranked in the latest national poll.
The individual champion was Shannon Rowbury of Duke who crossed in 19:03.20. Her teammate Clara Horowitz was the runner-up.
The Terps will have a break until Nov. 12 when they head to Bethlehem, Pa. for NCAA Regionals. There, Maryland will run the same course that they finished fourth out of 47 on a month ago at the Paul Short Invitational.
