Maryland Swims Strong At Day Two Terrapin Cup Prelims

The Maryland men's and women's swim teams placed a number of swimmers in the finals during the morning preliminaries on the second day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational.

Senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) won the preliminaries of the 100-breast in 1:04.15. Sophomore Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.), junior Kat Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) and freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan ) will join her in the finals tonight.

Senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished sixth in the preliminaries earning a spot in tonight's final heat of the 100-fly. Senior Inbal Levavi (Kibutz Givat Haim, Israel) finished ninth in the 100-back, while juniors Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados) and Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) finished 15^th and 22^nd also advancing to finals. Levavi finished sixth in the 400-IM prelims in 4:30.30 and Skalinskaya also advanced to finals in the 200-free.

On the men's side, five swimmers will swim at finals tonight in the 400-IM. Leading the group is sophomore Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) finished eighth this morning, others include junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) in 12^th-place, senior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) in 13^th-place, junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) in 19^th-place, and junior Rob Cabrera (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) in 24^th-place.

Freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and senior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) will swim the 200-free tonight. Miller, Shepard, freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), and freshman Kevin Rybicki (Lancaster, Pa.) will return in the 100-breast.
