Maryland Swimmers Advance To Terrapin Cup Finals On Day Three

The Maryland men's and women's swim teams placed a number of swimmers in the finals during the morning preliminaries on the third and final day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational.
Freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) both return tonight as the top-seed. Skalinskaya won the prelims in the 100-free (51.77) and Kovacs in the 200-breast (2:19.31). Junior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) will join Skalinskaya in the 100-free and junior Kat Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) will join Kovacs.
Senior Inbal Levavi (Kibutz Givat Haim, Israel) finished third in the 200-back (2:06.73) and senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) returns tonight as the 15th-seed in the 100-fly (2:11.79).
On the men's side, senior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.) finished 14th in the 200-back (1:58.25) followed by sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) in 20th and senior Chris Starr (Ellicott City, Md.) in 24th-place.
Freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) finished 16th in the 100-free (47.61) followed by junior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) in 19th-place. Freshman Kevin Rybicki (Lancaster, Pa.) leads the pack returning in the 200-breast finishing 13th. Junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) finished 16th in the 200-breast followed by freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) and junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.).
In the 200-fly, senior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) will return in the bonus-consolation finals joined by sophomores Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) and Joey Mechak (Rockville, Md.), and Thomasson.
Tonight's finals begin at 6 p.m. at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
