LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Chris McCray scored 17 points - nine in a 23-0 run in the second half - to lead No. 23 Maryland to a 98-69 victory over Chaminade on Tuesday in the consolation round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
The Terrapins (2-1), who lost 88-76 to No. 8 Gonzaga in the opening round, will Arkansas for fifth place on Wednesday.
Chaminade (0-2), the Division II host school of the eight-team tournament, brought back memories of its famed win over another Atlantic Coast Conference school in taking an 11-point lead in the first half. The Silverswords, then an NAIA school, stunned No. 1 Virginia and Ralph Sampson in December 1982.
Maryland ended any thoughts of an upset with the big second-half run that gave the Terrapins a 74-52 lead with 12:03 to play.
McCray hit a jumper to start the run that was fueled by Maryland's defense as Chaminade had trouble handling pressure and the Terrapins' size advantage inside.
Two free throws by Zach Whiting had given Chaminade a 52-51 lead with 17:13 to play. The Silverswords then missed five shots and committed six turnovers before Corey Campbell broke the drought with a 3-pointer with 11:41 left.
Maryland went on to lead by as many as 32 points, 96-64 with 3:49 to play.
James Gist and Nik Caner-Medley added 16 points apiece for Maryland, while Travis Garrison had 13 and Ekene Ibekwe 12.
Chris Reaves had 13 points for the Silverswords, and Campbell and Marko Kolaric 11 each. Whiting had eight points, 14 assists and nine turnovers. The 14 assists were one off the tournament record set by Brandon Granville of Southern California against Memphis in 1999.
Chaminade shot 51.6 percent in taking a 46-44 lead. The Silverswords led 38-27 with 4:17 left in the half and were still up 41-33 with 3:09 to play. But Garrison had four points in the Terrapins' 11-5 run to close the half.
The defeat gave the Silverswords, who lost 89-67 to No. 12 Michigan State in the first round, a 4-59 record in the tournament. Their last win was over an undermanned Villanova team in the first round in 2003.
This was the second meeting between the schools. Maryland beat Chaminade 95-67 in the opening round of the 1994 Maui Invitational.
