
Terp Swimmers Break School Relay Record At ACC Championships

ATLANTA - The Maryland men's swimming and diving team is in seventh place with 48 points after the first day of competition at the ACC Championships. Florida State and Virginia Tech are tied for the lead with 64 points.
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Stefan Geisen (Germany), junior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) and seniors Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) broke the 16-year-old school record by more than 3.5 seconds, clocking an NCAA `B' cut time of 6:36.37. They finished sixth in the event.
The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.), senior Gergo Szekely (Szentes, Hungary), senior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.) and sophomore Kevin Ford (Sinking Spring, Pa.) finished eighth with a time of 1:32.00.
The ACC Championships resume tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m. Follow the meet with Livestats.
