ATLANTA - Freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) broke the 16-year-old school record in the 200-yard individual medley at Thursday's ACC Championships preliminaries and will compete for the conference title tonight. In all, four Terps will swim in tonight's finals session.
Ott clocked in at 1:48.91, an NCAA `B' cut time, breaking the mark Mike Lambert set in 1989. It is the second Maryland record broken at the meet, as the 800-yard freestyle relay team last night shattered the previous mark by more than 3.5 seconds. Despite his record-breaking performance, Ott is the third seed in tonight's 200-IM finals.
Freshman Stefan Geisen (Germany) lowered his season-best time in the 500-free by nearly 10 seconds, finishing 15th with a time of 4:29.90. He will compete in the consolation round tonight. Senior Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.) will swim in the bonus consols after finishing 21st in a career-best 4:33.38 this morning.
Senior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.) is the Terps' lone representative in the 50-yard freestyle tonight. He tied for 17th in a career-best 20.73 this morning and will swim in the bonus consols.
The Terps are currently in seventh place with 48 points. Florida State and Virginia Tech are tied for the lead with 64 points. The finals begin tonight at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The session will include the 200-free relay, as well as the finals for the 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free and one-meter diving. Follow along with the meet with Livestats.
