ATLANTA -
Freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) lowered the school record in the 400-yard individual medley for the second time today, breaking the mark he set in this morning's preliminaries at the ACC Championships. As a team, the Terps are in eighth place with 172 points. Defending champion Virginia is in the lead with 502.5 points, followed by Florida State (383) and North Carolina (300.5).
Ott clocked in with an NCAA `B' cut of 3:52.14, bettering his previous mark by just more than one second. Despite his record-breaking performance, however, he finished fourth in the event behind the Cavaliers' trio of Pat Mellors, Fran Crippen and Bo Greenwood. The 400-IM is the fourth record Ott has set in two days, as he broke the 200-IM mark twice Thursday to go along with the 400-IM twice Friday.
Senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.33, and freshman Stefan Geisen (Germany) came in fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with an NCAA `B' cut time of 1:38.93. Junior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) also posted a `B' cut in the 200-free, finishing ninth with a career-best 1:38.84.
Senior Gergo Szekely (Szentes, Hungary) placed 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.40), while sophomore Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) came in 17th (57.66), senior E.J. Amyot (Fairport, N.Y.) finished 20th (58.32) and senior Tim Potter (West Deptford, N.J.) placed 21st (58.39).
Senior Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) finished 19th in the 100-back (50.96), and senior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.) finished 20th in the 100-yard butterfly (50.42). Sophomore Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) and junior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) came in 19th and 22nd, respectively, in the 400-IM with times of 4:01.59 and 4:02.67.
Freshman divers Jason Eccleston (Reisterstown, Md.) and Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) placed 17th and 18th, respectively, on the three-meter board with scores of 406.85 and 405.50.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Weinberg, Szekely, Fried and Doyle finished sixth with a season-best time of 3:19.81. Weinberg's leadoff 100-back split (49.12) was .01 seconds from his own record in the event, which he set at the 2003 conference championship meet.
The ACC Championships conclude tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Follow the meet with Livestats.
