
Four Terps Advance To Finals At ACC Championships

ATLANTA - The Maryland men's swimming and diving team advanced four swimmers to the finals on the last day of the ACC Championships. In all, 11 Terps will swim in tonight's session at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) is the top seed in the 200-yard backstroke. He posted an NCAA `B' cut time of 1:45.57, his best of the season and less than three-tenths of a second away from his own school record of 1:45.29. Senior Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) is the third seed in the 200-back. He clocked in at 1:47.80.
Freshmen Stefan Geisen (Germany) and Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) are the fifth and seventh seeds, respectively, in tonight's 200-yard butterfly finals. Geisen posted a season-best 1:49.75, while Ott swam a time of 1:49.87.
Sophomore Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) narrowly missed the finals in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing ninth with a season-best 2:02.94. He is the top seed in tonight's consolation heat. Junior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) finished 13th in the 200-fly with a season-best 1:51.10 and will swim in the consolations.
Terps swimming in the bonus consols include junior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.) in the 200-back (1:51.07); sophomore Kevin Ford (Sinking Spring, Pa.) in the 100-yard freestyle (45.99); senior Gergo Szekely (Szentes, Hungary) in the 200-breast (2:06.58); senior Tim Potter (West Deptford, N.J.) in the 200-breast (2:06.71); and sophomore Andrew Doeck (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the 200-fly (1:56.35).
The Terps are currently in eighth place with 172 points, trailing N.C. State (220). Defending champion Virginia is in the lead with 502.5 points, followed by Florida State (383) and North Carolina (300.5). The finals will begin tonight at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The session will include the 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-free relay, as well as the finals for the 200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly and platform diving.
