ATLANTA - Senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) won the ACC title in the 200-yard backstroke, breaking his own school record. As a team, the Terps finished eighth at the ACC Championships with 273 points. Virginia captured its seventh consecutive conference crown.

Weinberg is the only Terp to win an ACC title in 2005 and the first since Kevin Burke won the three-meter diving crown in 1999. The last swimmer to win a conference championship was Geoff Wilcox, who won the 50-free in 1994. Weinberg's 200-back time of 1:44.89 betters his previous school mark, which he set at the 2003 ACC Championships, by four-tenths of a second and is a new Georgia Tech Aquatic Center record and an NCAA `B' cut.

Freshman Martin Ott (Bayreuth, Germany) broke the school record in the 200-yard butterfly. His time of 1:47.84, an NCAA `B' cut, betters the mark set by Thomas Ehrhardt in 2002 by more than four-tenths of a second. The 200-fly is the fifth school record Ott has broken this weekend, as he reset both the 200- and 400-IM marks twice. Despite his record-breaking performance, however, Ott finished fourth in the 200-fly.

Senior Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 200-back (1:47.16), and freshman Stefan Geisen (Germany) came in fifth in the 200-fly (1:49.13).

Senior Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.) finished 13th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 15:44.84, sophomore Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) placed 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.12), and junior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) came in 14th in the 200-fly (1:50.95).

In the bonus consols, junior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.) finished 20th in the 200-back (1:50.67); sophomore Kevin Ford (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and junior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) placed 21st and 22nd, respectively, in the 100-free (45.99 and 46.03); senior Tim Potter (West Deptford, N.J.) came in 22nd in the 200-breast (2:07.16); and sophomore Andrew Doeck (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished 21st in the 200-fly (1:57.27).

The Terps' 400-free relay team of Weinberg, senior Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.), Ford and Doyle finished sixth with a season-best time of 3:00.89.

Ott (200-IM) and Weinberg (200-back) earned All-ACC honors for their top-three finishes at the meet. Virginia's Luke Anderson was named the Most Valuable Swimmer for the second time in his career, having won the honor in 2002 as well. Anderson received three individual medals and three relay medals. Miami's Miguel Velazquez was tabbed the 2005 Most Valuable Diver, after sweeping the one and three-meter boards.
