Maryland Gymnastics Third at Governor's Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The state of North Carolina won for the third year in a row over the state of Maryland at the 10th annual Governor's Cup Saturday. The Terps finished third, scoring a 192.425. North Carolina took first place with a 193.225. NC State finished second, scoring a 193.025. Towson came in fourth with a 191.85.

The Terps finished third on vault, scoring a 48.575. Junior Rachel Martinez and sophomore Angie Ferg scored a 9.775 to lead the squad. Junior Rebecca Ruppert followed with a 9.725.

Maryland finished third on uneven bars, scoring a 48.075. Martinez paced the Terps with a 9.80. Redshirt sophomore Ginny Scott notched a 9.775, while Junior Alexandria Gatch competed on bars for the second time this season, scoring a 9.575.

The Terps came away with a victory on balance beam, scoring a 47.875. Martinez took first-place in the meet with a 9.80. Senior Leah Brill followed with a 9.725. Ferg notched a 9.60 to round out the top three on the team.

Maryland finished third on floor exercise, scoring a 47.90. Brill led the squad with a 9.70. Martinez followed with a 9.65 and freshman Gretchen Kittelberger scored a 9.55.

Martinez scored a 39.025 in the all-around competition, finishing third. This was her highest total this season. Kittelberger competed in the all-around for the first time this season, scoring a 38.125 for a seventh place finish.

The Terps host Rutgers, Temple and Brockport, Friday, Feb.11 at 7p.m. in the Pavilion in Comcast Center.
