Final Stats

RALEIGH, N.C. - Down 6-4 after six innings, the Maryland bats came back in a big way, scoring 11 runs in the final three innings of the game to come away with a 15-6 road win over NC State. Elliot Singletary and Jason Von Behren each homered and had career-highs of four RBI, and Chris Clem (1-1, 3.90 ERA) battled all day to come away with his first win of the season. With the win, the Terps (9-4, 3-1 ACC) got off to their best start in conference play since the 1983 season.

Elliot Singletary, Brian Jarosinski and Jason Von Behren all homered and had at least two hits on the day, as the Maryland offense put up 15 runs on 14 hits. Eight of the nine Maryland starters scored runs, and seven had at least one RBI in handing NC State its first home loss of the season (9-1).

The Terps jumped out to an early lead, using an Elliot Singletary home run and an RBI single by Brian Jarosinski to score two first-inning runs. Singletary took a 3-1 offering from NC State starter Jeff Stallings over the left field wall for a lead-off home run - the first in any of Maryland's games this season. A walk to Truan Mehl, opposite-field single by Jordan Wilson and walk to Dan Melvin loaded the bases for center fielder Brian Jarosinski, who delivered with an RBI base-hit. Jarosinski, a .478 hitter in his last seven games, ripped an inside pitch from Stallings into left field to score Mehl from third and give the Terps a 2-0 lead.

After four scoreless halves, Maryland starter Chris Clem got into trouble in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with a double and two hit-by-pitches. Center fielder Matt Camp led off the inning with a double to the left field wall and advanced to third after Aaron Bates and Jake Muyco were both hit by pitches. Wolfpack left fielder Lee Mezistrano emptied the bases with a shot over the right field wall. Mezistrano's third career home run (two grand slams) got NC State on the board and gave the Wolfpack a 4-2 lead after three complete.

Brian Jarosinski led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run, pulling the Terps within a run at 4-3. For Jarosinski, it was his second home run of the season and 20th of his career. The junior outfielder drove in his seventh RBI in his last seven games and raised his average to over .300 for the first time this season.

The Terps would score again in the top of the sixth, as Bobby Ryan tied the game back up at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly to center field. Dan Melvin started the inning with a walk and moved to third on a hard double by Jason Von Behren, before scoring on Ryan's sac fly.

NC State answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to take back a 6-4 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Matt Devine and Brian Aragon scored a run, and a pair of sacrifice bunts would bring Aragon around from second base.

Down 6-4 after six innings, the Maryland bats responded in a big way, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Elliot Singletary led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a double to left-center by Truan Mehl. Both runners would move up a base on a wild pitch by Phil Davidson, with Singletary scoring the first run of the inning. A ground-rule double to right field by Jordan Wilson scored Mehl, and a walk to Brian Jarosinski left runners on first and second with two outs for Jason Von Behren. Von Behren, who had doubled in his previous at-bat, hit an 0-2 offering from reliever Adam McLaurin high and deep over the left field wall. Von Behren's second home run of the season gave the Terps a 9-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Chris Clem continued to battle, going over the 100-pitch mark for the first time all year with 7.1 innings of work. Chris Bowen relieved Clem in the bottom of the eighth and retired all five of the batters he faced in picking up his first career save.

The Terps plated six more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach. Elliot Singletary keyed the six-run outburst with a three-run double, and Will Frazier drove in his 10th run of the season with a single up the middle.

The first pitch of tomorrow's game will be at 2 p.m., with Ben Pfinsgraff (3-0, 1.80 ERA) set to face NC State's Gib Hobson (3-1, 5.32 ERA). Live stats will be available by logging on to www.umterps.com, and live audio from WMUC sports can be found at www.umterps.com and www.wmucsports.com.
