MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) placed 24th in the 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA Championships March 26. The only swimmer representing Maryland at the meet, Weinberg clocked in at 1:45.95, his third-best time of the season.
Despite his good time, Weinberg did not qualify for the finals and therefore did not score any points. Only the top 16 finishers move on to the evening session where the points are awarded.
Weinberg is the first Terp to qualify for the NCAA Championships since diver Kevin Burke in 1999. Weinberg won the 200-back title at the ACC Championships in February, breaking his own school record with a time of 1:44.89. He was the only Terp to win an ACC crown in 2005 and the first since Burke won the three-meter diving competition in 1999. The last swimmer to win a conference title before Weinberg was Geoff Wilcox, who won the 50-free in 1994.
Auburn won its third consecutive national title at the NCAA Championships, totaling 491 team points. Stanford finished second (414), followed by Arizona (388), California-Berkeley (381) and Florida (284). Host Minnesota placed 11th with 175 points. ACC Champion Virginia was the top team from the conference, taking 13th with (111), followed by Miami (18th place, 49 points), N.C. State (31st place, 4 points), Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and North Carolina (tied, 32nd place, 3 points), and Florida State (tied 35th, 2 points).
