March 30, 2005

Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Maryland baseball scored runs in seven of its eight at-bats, and redshirt freshman Mike Sufczynski won his third straight start as the Terps cruised to an 11-5 win over Temple on Wednesday. Sufczynski allowed four hits and two earned runs over 5.1 innings, and Chad Durakis, Truan Mehl and Will Frazier continued to swing hot bats with two RBI apiece. With the win, Maryland moved to 13-14 on the season, as it prepares for a trip to Atlanta, Ga. to take on No. 1 Georgia Tech.

Mehl extended his hitting streak to a team season-high 13 games with two hits and two RBI. Durakis went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to extend his hitting streak 11 games, and Will Frazier had a team-high three hits to raise his average to .395 over an eight-game hit streak. Two of Frazier's three hits were doubles, moving him into sole possession of second place on Maryland's career doubles list with 48.

Elliot Singletary had a perfect stat line in the game, going 1-for-1 with a double at the plate, but reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. He was hit by two pitches, walked twice, stole two bases and scored three runs. Jordan Wilson also scored three runs in the game, including one on a huge solo home run in the fourth inning. Maryland is 8-3 this season when Wilson has at least one run batted in.

Sufczynski moved to 3-0 with a 2.66 ERA on the season with 5.1 solid innings. He struck out three batters, walked three and gave up two earned runs. Brett Tidball, Justin Hulse and Michael Meagher closed out the game, with Meagher picking up his first career save. The junior transfer from Eckerd College (Fla.) didn't give up a hit and struck out three over the final 1.2 innings of the game.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first by Terp starter Mike Sufczynski, the Maryland offense manufactured a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. Leadoff hitter Elliot Singletary lined an Eric Fritz offering to the warning track in center field for a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Dan Melvin. A nice piece of hitting by Truan Mehl resulted in an RBI groundout to the right side of the infield and an early Maryland lead.

Temple evened the score in the top of the third, scoring an unearned run by Dan Brady. Brady reached on a fielding error by Dan Melvin, and then stole second to get into scoring position. Designated Gene Burpoe scored Brady from second with a long double off the left-center field fence.

Maryland answered with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Elliot Singletary scored Maryland's third straight run (dating back to last game) after walking, stealing second and third base and scoring on a line drive double by Truan Mehl. Mehl's double extended his team season-high hitting streak to 12 games and led to Singletary's team-leading 18th run of the season.

Jordan Wilson gave the Terps a two-run lead in the fourth with his second home run of the season. Wilson sent a 3-2 offering from Eric Fritz high and deep over the left field wall to put Maryland up 3-1 through four innings.

Chad Durakis plated Maryland's fourth and fifth runs of the game with a bases loaded single up the middle in the fifth inning. Nick Jowers led off the inning with a double, Elliot Singletary walked and Truan Mehl was intentionally walked before Durakis' 12th and 13th RBI of the season.

Temple scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull within two runs at 6-4, but the Terps tacked on three more runs for their fifth straight scoring inning and a 9-4 lead through seven innings. Will Frazier had an RBI single in the inning, and two runners scored on a wild pitch and throwing error by catcher Marc Wagner.

Brett Tidball relieved Sufczynski with a runner on base and one out in the sixth. Two pitches later the Terps were out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double play. Tidball threw 1.2 innings and gave up just a solo home run in the seventh. Justin Hulse came in to pitch the eighth inning, but ran into trouble after giving up a home run to shortstop Jason Connor to start the inning. A walk and a double later, Michael Meagher relieved Hulse and got two big outs to leave two runners in scoring position.

Meagher closed out the game with a hitless ninth to pick up his first career save and give the Terps their second straight win.

Maryland will get back to conference play this weekend when it travels to No. 1 Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets are 21-4 overall this season and 11-1 in conference play, moving to the No. 1 spot in Collegiate Baseball's most recent poll.
