Final Stats
DURHAM, N.C. -
Duke put a run across in the second inning and led throughout on the way to a 2-1 win over Maryland baseball. Duke starter Greg Burke threw 139 pitches and struck out nine in a complete game win, and Chris Clem gave up two earned runs in six innings to the loss. Will Frazier drove in the team's only run of the game with an RBI single in the eighth inning, and Elliot Singletary and Jordan Wilson each led the team with two hits.
Maryland fell to 15-21 and 4-15 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the loss, while Duke improved to 10-26 and 2-14.
With six solid innings, Chris Clem moved into second place on Maryland's career innings pitched list with 271.2. He struck out six and gave up six hits and five walks, picking up a loss in his fifth straight start. Over those five starts the Maryland offense has averaged less than 2.8 runs per game, including one run in today's game.
In the second inning, Clem struck out two of the first three batters he faced, but walked catcher Bryan Smith to leave a runner on first base with two outs. Jimmy Gallagher followed with a single through the right side of the Maryland infield, and Clem walked Javier Socorro to load the bases with two outs. Smith scored the next at-bat on a passed ball by catcher Bobby Ryan. The unearned run became earned with a walk to Adam Murray, as Duke went up 1-0 through two innings.
Maryland left a runner on second base in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings, as an RBI base hit escaped the Terrapin offense.
Duke put another run on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning, knocking Clem out of the game with no outs in the inning. Clem was pulled after back-to-back singles by Javier Socorro and Adam Murray, and Justin Hulse came in and retired all three batters he faced. But, before he threw a pitch, Hulse balked runners to second and third, as Socorro scored two pitches later on a sacrifice fly by Brett Bartles. Hulse got the final two outs of the inning, but not before Duke upped its lead to 2-0.
The Maryland offense cut the deficit back down to one run in the top of the eighth inning, as Will Frazier scored Truan Mehl on a single into left field. Mehl hit the ball hard through third baseman J.J. Koterba's legs, reaching on an error. He stole second base without a throw, and then scored on Frazier's single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
That's as close as the Terps would get. Justin Hulse worked a scoreless eighth to give the Maryland offense a chance, but Greg Burke capped off his complete game with a 1-2-3 ninth. Burke improved to 5-5 on the season, as the Blue Devils took the first of a three-game series by a final score of 2-1.
