Final Stats
DURHAM, N.C. -
Maryland baseball scored the first run of the game, but Duke came back to score six runs over the first three innings to beat the Terps 6-1 at Jack Coombs Field on Sunday. Jordan Wilson drove in the only Terrapin run with a two-out RBI double in the first inning, and Brett Cecil kept Maryland in the game with five scoreless innings of relief. Maryland fell to 16-22 overall and 5-16 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, as it gets ready for a pair of mid-week games against Coppin State and UMBC this week.
Six Terrapin hitters had hits in the game, led by two each by Wilson and designated hitter Chad Durakis. Brett Cecil struck out five batters and didn't give up a run in a career-high five innings, and Will Frazier moved within four doubles of the school's career record with the 55th of his career. Earlier in the series, Frazier broke a school record with his 361st career total base, a weekend after breaking the extra-base hit record (now has 85 in his career).
Maryland got out to a one-run lead on a couple of two-out doubles by Will Frazier and Jordan Wilson. Frazier lined a David Torcise offering into left field with two outs, and Jordan Wilson followed with an RBI double to put the Terps up 1-0.
Duke came back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, as Javier Socorro led off with a solo home run. Socorro turned on a 1-0 offering from Maryland starter Sean Kane and lifted it just over the left field wall to tie the game up at 1-1.
Torcise worked through a scoreless second, and the Blue Devils came back with four more runs in the bottom of the second. Bryan Smith, Javier Socorro and Brett Bartles all had RBI base hits, as Duke strung together seven hits in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
Duke tacked on another run in the third inning to go up by a 6-1 margin. Corey Whiting stole a couple of bases and scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Smith.
That would be all the scoring in the game, as Brett Cecil came in to hold the Blue Devils scoreless over the final five innings, and the Terps couldn't generate any more offense on Torcise and reliever Tony Bajoczky.
Cecil came on and gave up just two hits over 5.0 innings, striking out five and walking none in the longest outing of his young career.
Maryland will look to rebound this weekend when it takes on Coppin State at home on Tuesday and travels to UMBC on Wednesday. Wake Forest will come to College Park next weekend (April 22-24), with Saturday's game being televised regionally by Fox Sports.
