COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Wake Forest broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth inning in a big way, scoring six runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to come away with an 11-5 win over Maryland baseball on Sunday afternoon. With wins on Saturday and Sunday, Wake won the three-game series and improved to 19-23 overall and 11-13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps fell to 19-24 on the season and 6-18 in the ACC.
With the game tied at 5-5 in the sixth inning, it appeared as if the game was heading towards the third straight one-run game of the series, but six Wake Forest runs broke the game open late.
Maryland starter Chris Clem got a no-decision in the game, giving up seven hits four earned runs in 6.0 innings. Clem went at least six innings for the eighth time in nine starts and is now 16.1 innings behind Maryland career leader, John Rayne, with 277.2.
The Terrapins' 6-7-8-9 hitters scored four of the Terps' five runs, and Elliot Singletary went 2-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored.
Entering the weekend, Singletary was 32nd in the nation and tied for third in the conference in doubles, and he hit three in the weekend series to bring his season total to a team-leading 19. And with two doubles in today's series finale, he moved into a tie for seventh place on the school's single season record list.
Will Frazier also moved up on a Maryland record list with his 127th and 128th career RBI in the game, cracking the top five on the school's all-time list. Frazier had three RBI over the weekend and now leads the team with 28 on the season.
Brian Jarosinski continued to swing a hot bat in the game, recording two hits in four at-bats today and extending a hitting streak to five games. Three of the last four of those games have been multi-hit efforts, as Jarosinski has raised his batting average from .203 to .247 in the last six days.
J.B. Tucker and Ryder Mathias went a combined 6-for-10 with five RBI, four runs and two home runs to lead a group of four Wake hitters with three hits. Wake Forest had 16 hits in the game, nine of which came in the key seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Both teams scored first-inning runs, as Maryland responded to an unearned run by Wake with an RBI groundout by Will Frazier. Elliot Singletary led off the Maryland first with a double into left field and scored on Frazier's ground ball to the shortstop Andy Goff.
Wake came back with a pair of runs in the second inning to take an early 3-1 lead. Casey Sterk led off with a walk, and Grant Achilles hit a flare single into left field to put runners on first and second base with no outs. After Andy Goff sacrificed both runners along, Brett Linnenkohl singled in a run, and Matt Antonelli hit a sacrifice fly to score the second Demon Deacon run of the inning.
Up 3-1 in the fifth, J.B. Tucker and Ryder Mathias hit back-to-back solo home runs to take a four-run lead. For Tucker, fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in home runs entering the weekend, it was his second home run of the series and 11th of the season.
Maryland chipped away in the bottom of the inning behind an RBI single from Will Frazier. Joe Palumbo, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a walk to Truan Mehl and scored on Frazier's single into left field.
In the sixth, Elliot Singletary capped off a Terrapin rally with a game-tying three-run double. Jason Von Behren and Chad Durakis hit back-to-back singles, and Matt Maropis walked to load the bases with one out. After a strike out, Elliot Singletary lined the first pitch he saw from Brian Bach down the left field line, emptying the bases with his team-leading 19th double of the season.
Wake Forest rallied in the seventh inning, scoring what would be the game-winning run on an RBI single by Matt Miller. After singles by J.B. Tucker and Ryder Mathias, Miller blooped a Michael Meagher offering into left field to score Tucker from third base.
The Demon Deacons tacked on five runs in the eighth and ninth innings, including two in the ninth that took away the possibility of a game-tying grand slam.
The Terps did load the bases in the ninth, but Tim Morley closed the door with a game-ending strikeout for his first career save.
Maryland travels to James Madison on Tuesday, April 26th, before its final conference road series at No. 5 Miami April 30-May 1st.
