COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland head coach Gina LaMandre announced today the signing of Devon Williams and Lindsey Ubrun to National Letters of Intent to play for the Terrapins. Williams, an infielder/outfielder from Cleveland, N.C., and Ubrun, an infielder from Riverside, Calif., will join Maryland for the 2006 season.
"Devon is an infielder/outfielder from North Carolina," LaMandre said. "She will be used as a utility player and is a hardworking, aggressive player. She has very good speed which will contribute to our offensive options."
Williams was a four-year letterwinner at West Rowan High School and a three-time All-Rowan county team selection. West Rowan won back-to-back North Carolina state championships in 2002 and 2003, and Williams was a North Piedmont conference team, Charlotte Observer All-Piedmont team and All-State team honoree in addition to being named MVP of the state tournament twice.
Ubrun, a four-year letterwinner at Riverside Poly High School, led the Bears to the 2004 Division I CIF Championship and three Ivy League Championships. As an infielder, Ubrun was a three-time member of the all-league team as well as a 2004 All-County and second team All-CIF selection. Her Amateur Softball Association (ASA) squad was California state champions twice.
"Lindsey is an infielder who has very good hands and is quick to the ball," LaMandre said. "She is a solid hitter and has extensive ASA playing experience having played for the 16 and under Gordon's Panthers and the Cal Lite Gold 18 and under team."
Williams and Ubrun join Meredith Nelles and Amanda D'Attilio as the Terps' incoming class for the 2005-06 school year.
Nelles, hailing from Wilmington, Del., is a pitcher/infielder/outfielder and will come to the Terps from Brandywine High School. Playing under coach Walter Hagelstein, Nelles is a two-time first-team all-state pitcher in 2003 and 2004. Her team finished with a record of 19-2 while Nelles set the single-season record for strikeouts with 262 in 2004. Nelles also holds the single-season RBI and doubles record (set in 2003).
D'Attilio, a right fielder out of Woodbridge, Va., will come to the Terrapins from CD Hylton High School. Playing under coach Desiree Hayden, D'Attilio was CD Hylton's Most Valuable Player in 2004 and also earned Cardinal District Player of the Year. She was a first team Northwest Region and a Washington Post first team all-extra, in addition to being named to the all-area team by the Potomac News and Northern Virginia Journal.
