Final Stats
BOWIE, Md. -
Ryan Moorer allowed just one unearned run on four hits in five innings, and the Maryland defense turned three double plays to lead the Terps to a 2-1 victory over the Bowie Baysox on Tuesday night. In an exhibition game played with wooden bats, Maryland turned a pair of fourth-inning runs into a one-run victory over the Orioles' double-A affiliate.
In the last four days, Maryland has defeated the top-ranked team in the country in Georgia Tech and a minor league team in the Bowie Baysox.
Matt Maropis and Jason Von Behren each drove in runs in the fourth inning, and Dan Melvin had a team-high two hits and a run scored in the game. Seth Overbey and Michael Meagher closed out the game with two innings of scoreless relief, with Meagher picking up a save. The stats from the game don't count towards the team's season numbers.
In the Terps' fourth, Dan Melvin led off the inning with a single through the right side. Will Frazier followed by reaching on a throwing error by Bowie third baseman Joey Hammond, and Chad Durakis hit an infield single to load the bases with no outs. The next batter, Matt Maropis, grounded out to short to score Melvin, and Jason Von Behren scored a run when he reached on a fielding error by pitcher Nick McCurdy.
Moorer allowed just one unearned run in the bottom half of the fourth, as second baseman Gary Cates came around to score after leading off with an infield single.
That was the only blemish in Moorer's stat line, as he gave up just four hits and no earned runs in 5.0 innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out one on his way to a win. Seth Overbey pitched well and didn't give up a run, and Michael Meagher closed out his third game in the last week with one hitless inning.
The Terps return to their regular season schedule tomorrow night at Shipley Field, when they take on UMBC for the second time this season. First pitch will be at 7 p.m., with freshman Mike Sufczynski (3-0, 2.66 ERA) expected to take the mound for the Terrapins.
