COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The sixth-seeded Maryland Terrapins posted a 2-0 win over the second-seeded Florida State Seminoles in game six of the ACC Softball Tournament at the Terrapin Softball Complex on Friday afternoon. Senior pitcher Jessica Aditays got the win for the Terrapins as Maryland defeated Florida State for the first time in ACC Tournament play. Nikki Smith led the way for the Terps going 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.
Maryland struck early with a run in the bottom of the second to take an 1-0 lead. After three straight singles loaded the bases for the Terps, Natalie Grossman drew a one out walk bringing home Smith from third for her ninth RBI of the season.
The Terrapins added to their lead in the fourth when Smith connected on her third home run of the season for a 2-0 Maryland advantage. Smith deposited the 3-2 offering from Florida State starter Tiffany McDonald down the line in left just around the foul pole. A double to Crystal Rizzuto and a walk to Lauren Pollock chased McDonald in relief of Casey Hunter, who struck out the side to end the inning.
The two runs would be all Aditays would need as she pitched six innings in relief of starter Abbey Welch, who left the game after an undisclosed injury in the second. Aditays shut down the Seminoles allowing three hits while striking out eight.
With the win Maryland moves to 27-20 on the season and will face NC State in the final game of the evening at 7:30 pm. The loss eliminates Florida State (33-26) from the tournament marking the first time in ACC Tournament history the Seminoles have lost the first two games.
