COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
No. 15 Florida State scored three runs in the game's first two innings and held off Maryland baseball to win 4-2 on Sunday and sweep the schools' three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series. Florida State outscored the Terps by a total of 13-0 in the first three innings of each game to win its 23rd straight game over Maryland and improve to 41-14 overall and 15-9 in the ACC. Maryland remained a game away from exceeding last season's win total and finished the conference regular season with a 7-22 mark.
Jason Von Behren led Maryland and tied for a game-high with two hits in four at-bats, his third multi-hit effort in four games. Over his last eight games, Von Behren has raised his season batting average 35 points with a 10-for-23 (.435) hot streak.
Elliot Singletary doubled to move into second place on the school's single season doubles list with 23, and Bobby Ryan walked for the 16th time to move within one of tying a career high. Brian Jarosinski had a pinch-hit single, and Chad Durakis and Will Frazier had base hits in the game.
Chris Clem took the loss in the game to move to 2-7 on the season. After allowing three runs on six hits in the first two innings of the game, he settled down to allow just a run and three hits over his next five innings. Clem gave up a total of nine hits and four runs over seven innings - the 10th time in 11 starts he has pitched at least six innings.
Clem moved his season innings total to a team-high 78.2 and his career total to 291.0 in the game - four shy of tying the school record of 294.0 (John Rayne, 1989-92). With three strikeouts in the game, Clem also moved into a tie for seventh place on the school's all-time list with 213.
Florida State put a run across in the first inning for the second straight day on an RBI double by catcher Aaron Cheesman. Shane Robinson led off the inning with a single and came around to score from first on Cheesman's eighth double of the season.
The Seminoles added two more runs in the second inning behind RBI base hits by Tony Thomas, Jr. and Ryne Malone. With runners on first and third, Thomas, Jr. lined a Chris Clem offering into right field to score Josh Spivey and then scored on a single up the middle by Malone.
After a Daniel Wardell sacrifice fly gave the Seminoles a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth, Maryland got on the board with an RBI double by Elliot Singletary. Bobby Ryan drew a one-out walk and came around to score from first base on Singletary's 23rd double of the season. With the double, Singletary moved into sole possession of second on the Maryland single season doubles list and drove in his 10th run in 10 games.
Both bullpens kept the game at 4-1 through the top of the ninth inning, but the Terps broke through with a run and threatened to tie off FSU closer Tyler Chambliss. Jason Von Behren hit a leadoff single, Taylor Baum walked and Brian Jarosinski singled to load the bases with two outs. Von Behren scored on a wild pitch by Chambliss, and the tying runs moved into scoring position on the play. But Chambliss came up with a big strikeout to end the Terrapin threat and cap off a Florida State sweep.
The Terps will look to rebound in its final two games of the season when it hosts Longwood on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (May 10-11).
